Will the Hadron Collider end up Proving the Scriptural Account of Creation and the Afterlife?

by

Joseph BH McMillan

In my article “Are We Genetically Programmed by, and with, the Ten Commandments” I said this: “if Winston is right about a “morality module” in the brain, then we could even be on the verge of scientifically discovering what that “morality” is – or, as I shall now argue, of discovering how we are in fact programmed by the Ten Commandments.”

It seems that I may have underestimated the speed and depth of scientific research and discovery. With the Hadron Collider (LHC), scientists may in fact be on the verge of proving (unintentionally) the Scriptural account of creation and the afterlife.

Like most people, I expect, until last Wednesday (October 8th, 2008) all I knew about the Hadron Collider (LHC) is that it is a vast research project straddling the French/Swiss border where particles are shot through a ‘tube’ at high speed.

But then we had the doomsayers running off to courts in several countries to stop an experiment which they claimed would create a black hole which would reduce the planet to a mass of dense matter (their case was something along those lines anyway). The end of the world was at hand.

So when I discovered that the earth was still there on Wednesday morning I thought it may be worth having a closer look at what was going on over there on the border of France and Switzerland.

And what I found was quite remarkable!

I won’t try to reproduce here the experiments being conducted by the LHC; you can find them on the CERN website. (I’m trying to keep this piece as short as possible – unlike some of my previous articles)

So let me go straight to the question of the Scriptural account of creation and how the LHC may end up proving the that account.

The LHC and Genesis

In my article about the Ten Commandments, under the heading “Gene ‘Creation’ according to the Scriptures,” I start at Genesis 1:2 – 3: “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

I then say this: “The Scriptures then tell us that the “spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” The symbolism here seems clear to me – laws were applied to the matter that was up until then “without form, and void.” That is, without laws as to how this matter should ‘behave’, that is all it was – matter. The application of laws to the matter gives the matter certain ‘properties’.”

I then go on to explain that after these Laws were applied, the dense matter ‘exploded’, so to speak, with the result that the ‘new’ matter became subject to additional and different laws – that is, the new matter had different properties to the original matter.

Other laws then dictate how the various properties of this ‘new’ matter can interact with each other. Those laws dictate which matter, and under what circumstances, can ‘create’ new matter with yet  a different set of properties (ie, ‘new’ matter becoming subject to a different set of laws).

And so, over millions of years, this process unfolded resulting in what we see all around us, and also, what we can’t see.

Under the heading “Genetics in Genesis” in my Ten Commandments article, I demonstrate how Genesis explains this process.

So how does the LHC impact on this?

The object of the Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) is this: “Collisions in the LHC will generate temperatures more than 100 000 times hotter than the heart of the Sun. Physicists hope that under these conditions, the protons and neutrons will 'melt', freeing the quarks from their bonds with the gluons. This should create a state of matter called quark-gluon plasma, which probably existed just after the Big Bang when the Universe was still extremely hot. The ALICE collaboration plans to study the quark-gluon plasma as it expands and cools, observing how it progressively gives rise to the particles that constitute the matter of our Universe today.”

Essentially, what they are looking for is what I have described – how the properties of the ‘original’ matter “create a state of matter called quark-gluon plasma” which, in turn, as it “expands and cools,” gives rise to the particles of our present universe – that is particles with properties that give rise to life itself.

Now, what we can observe in the universe accounts, say scientists, for only some 4% of matter. The rest, they think, is made up of 26% Dark Matter, and 70% Dark Energy – but we know almost nothing about these ‘substances’.

CERN says this about Dark Matter: “But what is dark matter? One idea is that it could contain ‘supersymmetric particles’ - hypothesized particles that are PARTNERS to those already known in the Standard Model. Experiments at the Large Hadron Collider may be able to find them.” [MY EMPHASIS]

If they are right about these particle “partners,” it raises some intriguing questions. Taking into account the ALICE experiment, we see that the particles (or matter) must then have been ‘created’ in the process of the “quark-gluon plasma” expanding and cooling and thus PROGRESSIVELY giving “rise to the particles that constitute the matter of our Universe today”.

In other words, the laws which dictated how all this ‘original’ matter must behave ends up with particles of one kind of matter being ‘partnered’ with particles of another kind of matter.

But since human beings are also made up of matter, they too must then be made up of matter ‘partnered’ in this way. But it must go further, the very fact that matter is ‘partnered’ may dictate that life itself, especially human life, must be ‘partnered’ in order to exist and perpetuate itself.

Genesis 1:27 then begins to make more sense – “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”

The Laws established “in the beginning” gave rise to the basic structure of matter – dark and visible matter being ‘partnered’. If the basic structure of matter requires such a ‘partnering, then it makes sense that the organisms it gives rise to should reflect that fundamental constitution of matter.

But this basic structure, if proven, would also explain one of Christ’s sternest rebukes: “Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: BUT IT WAS NOT SO FROM THE BEGINNING.” [Matthew 19:8 – my emphasis]

And this: “He which made them at the beginning made them male and female.” [Matthew 19:4]

But, as I think I have demonstrated in my previous articles, the ‘creation’ of man on the sixth “day” means that the basic human organism was a configuration of matter which, because of its properties (or the laws that govern its primitive structure), would develop into what Philo called its final “distinctive form; since the extreme species are contained in the genus.” And perhaps the LHC will provide the evidence that the origin of the “genus”, the male and female that make up the “image of God”, has its genesis, its “beginning,” in the partnering of visible and dark particles – the basic building blocks of matter.

And there we may have the first evidence of a moral law, or God’s Law, the Ten Commandments – Commandments 5 and 7 – Honor thy Father and thy Mother, and Thou shalt not commit adultery. The ‘partnering’ cannot be undone without serious consequences – it is a breach of The Law.

Now I shall not make this analysis excruciatingly long by demonstrating how the other various experiments being conducted with the LHC may lead to similar ‘proof’ of the Scriptural account of creation, and how that explains the human capacity, or faculty (reason), to discover morality, or God’s Law – I shall leave that for my forthcoming book – The Law: Salvation, the State, and the Kingdom of God.

So let me address the second aspect I have identified – the Scriptural account of the afterlife and how the LHC may just provide some proof there as well.

The Afterlife

Let me start this section with Luke 16:19-34. I should quote the whole thing:

"There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.” [my emphasis]

In my first book, Escaping Britain, I say this about that quote:

“But what I found particularly interesting about the Lazarus story was the reference to a “great gulf” between Lazarus and the rich man that cannot be crossed. It reminded me of the new String Theory being propounded by some scientists and mathematicians. It proposes that there are as many dimensions as ten or more existing side by side. But the interesting part is that it theorises that it is impossible to cross between some of these dimensions in certain states. To me that sounded like what Abraham was saying to the rich man about the great gulf.”

Let me try to set out my argument – from both my books – as succinctly as possible.

Taking up on my Ten Commandments article, the argument is this. The Laws which govern the universe, and thus life, determine the properties of matter, and no doubt energy. As matter configured after the initial application of laws to the “void” which existed before, that newly configured matter was ‘programmed’, so to speak, with the laws which determined its nature.

The final element in that, from where we are today, is a human being having been ‘programmed’ with the laws that govern the universe. But that ‘programming cannot be found by dissecting the genes – rather, the genes specify the “ingredients” to be combined together, and the Laws which govern those ingredients then determine the structure of the human species. Part of that ‘structuring’ is what Winston called a “morality module” in the brain, or what I say is a brain structure that reflects the moral Law derived from the basic properties of the matter which constitutes the human organism.

But that brain structure has to be connected up – literally, the neurons have to be connected. Reason is the mechanism the Law has endowed upon us to achieve that.

Once those neurons are connected up, they create matter, or perhaps energy, which becomes subject to a new set of Laws. This matter, or energy, is thus configured in such a way that it becomes capable of passing from one dimension into another.

If the brain is not configured in a way which creates this new matter or energy, it is confined to the present dimension, perhaps even in a conscious state with all the cravings of the physical senses, but no way of satisfying them – an eternity of hell – as the rich man in the Lazarus story discovered.

And the way to connect up the brain so as to configure the new matter or energy in such a way as to enable it to traverse the “great divide” is what I call God’s Law – the Ten Commandments. In effect, connecting up the brain in this way actually discovers the Kingdom of God that is “within us.” [Luke 17:21]

In short, we need to give birth, so to speak, to the new matter, or energy, and we do that by complying with The Law and thus connecting up the Kingdom of God that is programmed into us.

So let’s see what they plan to discover about these additional dimensions with the LHC.

This is what the CERN site says: “Some string theorists have taken this idea further to explain a mystery of gravity that has perplexed physicists for some time – why is gravity so much weaker than the other fundamental forces? Does its carrier, the graviton, exist and where? The idea is that we do not feel gravity’s full effect in the everyday world. Gravity may appear weak only because its force is being shared with other spatial dimensions.

“To find out whether these ideas are just products of wild imaginations or an incredible leap in understanding will require experimental evidence. But how? High-energy experiments could prise open the inconspicuous dimensions just enough to allow particles to move between the normal 3D world and other dimensions. This could be manifest in the sudden disappearance of a particle into a hidden dimension, or the unexpected appearance of a particle in an experiment. Who knows where such a discovery could lead!”

Well, it will certainly lead to an explanation of the Lazarus parable, and the “great gulf fixed” between Lazarus and the rich man. It would also cast light on Christ’s reference to His Father’s house having many mansions. [John 14:2].

In fact, it would provide an explanation of one of the most ‘celebrated’ verses in the New Testament, John 3:3, 5 and 6: “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot SEE the kingdom of God. … Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

And where else in the Scriptures do we see reference to “water” and the “spirit”? Genesis Chapter 1, verse 2: “And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

God’s laws were applied to the ‘original’ matter, and the universe and life was ‘born’! The spirit clearly symbolizes the Law, and the waters clearly symbolize the matter that will be configured by the Law.

Therefore, if we are to be “born again, we need to discover and do God’s Law which is “within us” so that that matter can transform, be “born again”, in a configuration that enables us to end up on Lazarus’s side of the “great gulf,” rather than the side on which the “rich man” found himself – still with his physical appetites, but with no means of satisfying them.

I expect scientists will discover, whether at the LHC or at some other place, the explanation for the “great gulf” – at least they are looking, even though they don’t seem to know it.

Conclusion

Once we understand the Scriptures in this way we suddenly see that the imagery of a ‘vengeful God, a jealous God’, a God ready to punish ‘evildoers’, the imagery that causes so many to mock the Scriptures, is actually quite the reverse.

What it shows is a God who put laws into place in the universe, including a law that enables us to freely choose how to apply out “talents”, our faculties, but also instilled in us warning mechanisms to help us from going astray – things like guilt.

And we are gifted with the “talent” to reason, and thus discover and connect up the brain structure ‘programmed’ into us in order that we can pass into what we may call heaven – the correct dimension, Lazarus’s side of the great divide.

We make the choice on whether we will apply our “talents” to do so, God is impartial. If we don’t comply with the Law, we face the consequences, just as when we try to defy the law of gravity by jumping off a cliff. It’s pointless asking how God could allow us to go crashing down to earth – He set up the Laws, and we are free to comply with those Laws or not, but either way, those Laws will apply.

This analysis also counters those who mock the notion of a ‘loving’ God. How can a 'loving' God allow such suffering and injustice in the world? they ask. How can a 'loving' God allow thousands, even millions of innocent people to perish in natural disasters, in wars, and for simple lack of basic necessities like food and water? How can a 'loving' God condemn human beings to eternal damnation?

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.” [Eccl 4:1]

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.” [Eccl 8:14]

In this way, we see that God is not some version of a Bono or Geldof on steroids, running around the world’s disaster zones trying to save man from himself, or from some natural disaster. The suffering and injustice we see in the world is evidence enough for that.

As Abraham said to the rich man, we have “Moses and the prophets; we should hear them.”God doesn’t condemn us to eternal damnation; we do it ourselves by refusing to obey His Law, in the same way that we condemn ourselves to be smashed on the rocks below if we attempt to defy the Law of Gravity by jumping off a cliff.

And so there we have it. The Hadron Collider on a collision course with the Scriptures – but I expect the collision will transform the way we see the Scriptures, and hopefully, transform the way scientists see the Scriptures.

Mankind can only benefit from such a greater understanding.
